National Anthem
Joel Kettner - on 22 July 2018

In the late 1940s, our family welcomed a Latvian family of four to our home in Quincy, Mass. The Priedes had fled Latvia from Russian takeover, landed in Germany as DPs and we sponsored them to come to US. Mr. Priede was an officer in the Latvian Army, but they had to escape with the "shirt on their backs". Their grown children were Andres (20+) and Maja, a teenager, who seemed to adjust to our country well. Maja came to a Christian school I attended, and her first day sang the Latvian National Anthem with such a beautiful voice that I have never forgotten. I didn’t hear the anthem again, until 1990 when I saw on the TV the celebration of their independence from Russia, and I just wept with joy. The Priedes stayed with us for about 3 months and eventually settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts, where they eventually died. I was not able to keep up with the children over the years, but assume they assimilated as productive citizens into American society. They were in many ways a Godsend to our family that I have come to appreciate over the years.
